Como buena admiradora de cualquier banda que comparta una historia de misterio, y promulgue una idea musical que tenga que ver más con un culto que con el protagonismo de las personas que la forman, no he podido evitar rendirme a esta nueva logia escandinava en adoración del sol. Big Sun, cuyos miembros prefieren permanecer en el anonimato, ha venido a rescatarnos de nuestras vidas aburridas y a llevarnos un mundo de nuevas sensaciones. Si ellos se identifican con Mercyful Fate y Ghost, pasaré a desgranar otras aristas del prisma que no dejarán indiferente a quien los escuche.
Nos abre las puertas el tema «The Sun», como no podía ser de otra manera, ya que el culto tiene al sol como principal deidad. Este culto que remonta hasta principios del siglo XIX con Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte como promotor del mismo. Nos reciben unos cánticos a coro, a ritmo de riff guitarrero, y los agudos insondables al estilo King Diamond. En la letra nos explica la historia del culto para que sepamos dónde nos estamos metiendo. No puedo evitar terminar levantando el puño y gritando con el coro «Sun, Sun, Sun, Sun». Estoy dentro. La dupla que sigue, «I was loving you» y «Stronger than anyone», se centra más en un ambiente new retrowave y AOR, más suave musicalmente respecto al primer golpe. La primer quizás suena más a bandas como Gathering of Kings o Ghost, con un sólo de guitarra certero. Mientras que la segunda tiene un toque más tecno y bailable. Temáticamente parece que se desplazan del tema culto principal, sin embargo lo que están haciendo es mostrarnos los poderes que se pueden conseguir una vez que eres aceptada en la logia secreta.
A través de un lick de teclado hipnótico y misal se destapan las cortinas de «Directions». Este tema tiene un ataque en la voz que recuerda a The Cult, aunque el ambiente y desarrollo del mismo saben a otros grandes de las logias ocultistas, Blue Öyster Cult. En la letra se revelan secretos de autodescubrimiento y empoderamiento que todo adepto debe conocer. Ante tanta revelación de conocimiento toca que seamos nosotros quienes hagamos entrega de algo. «Maiden sacrifice» rompe el ritmo dulce que habíamos tomado a base de guitarrazo rockero, metiéndonos en un estilo más a Mercyful Fate y Lordi, para exigir que hagamos el sacrificio necesario.
Toma de nuevo el protagonismo el sonido más suave, con un teclado y ritmo que recuerdan a The Nightflight Orchestra, para indicarnos algún sacrificio más que exige el culto con «Lovers die at midnight». Este fue el primer single que salió y me hizo seguirles la pista, en octubre de 2022. La oscuridad se vuelve a cernir sobre nuestra cabezas con el inicio de las teclas en «You know you want it», en que nos hacen saber todo lo que podamos conseguir como parte del club. De nuevo aparecen influencias de Ghost y Lordi.
Pero nada de lo anterior podía prepararme para lo que me esperaba con «Ra Horaktus». El título es cristalino, trata sobre el Gran Sol y su poder. El tema más cañero con diferencia, con un ataque musical a lo Rammstein, que pasa a complementarse con gritos agudos a lo King Diamond. Cierra la obra una balada muy esotérica «The totem», en la que de nuevo huelo a The Cult y me gusta.
La banda escandinava, formada sencillamente por guitarra, batería y teclado, se han dejado ver en el Nordic Noise Festival el pasado 11 de mayo y, según parece, no han dejado descontentos al público. Los cuatro singles publicados parece que atacan más al sector del AOR y rock melódico, pero sin duda hay toques hard rock y metal en el trabajo. Una obra variada que apunta a muchas direcciones y con un concepto que los fans de las conspiraciones adoraremos seguir, como hicimos con Blue Öyster Cult o los inicios de Ghost. Solo el tiempo y el Gran Sol conocen cómo seguirá esta aventura musical. Citando al maestro de la logia “En el más allá, cuando se pone el sol, la música, el hilo invisible del universo, permanece eternamente”.

Big Sun, whose members prefer to remain anonymous, has come to rescue us from our boring lives and bring us a world of new sensations. If they identify with Mercyful Fate and Ghost, I will go on to explain other aspects of the prism that will not leave anyone who listens to them indifferent.
The song «The Sun» opens the doors to us, as it could not be otherwise, since the cult has the sun as its main deity. This cult dates back to the beginning of the 19th century with Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte as its promoter. We are greeted by some choral chants, to the rhythm of a guitar riff, and the unfathomable high notes in the style of King Diamond. In the lyrics he explains the history of the cult so that we know what we are getting into. I can’t help but end up raising my fist and shouting with the chorus «Sun, Sun, Sun, Sun.» I’m in. The duo that follows, «I was loving you» and «Stronger than anyone», focuses more on a new retrowave and AOR atmosphere, softer musically compared to the first hit. The first one perhaps sounds more like bands like Gathering of Kings or Ghost, with an accurate guitar solo. While the second has a more techno and danceable touch. Thematically they seem to move away from the main cult theme, however what they are doing is showing us the powers that can be achieved once you are accepted into the secret lodge.
Through a hypnotic and missal keyboard lick, the curtains of «Directions» are revealed. This song has an attack in the voice that is reminiscent of The Cult, although its atmosphere and development taste like another great occult lodge, Blue Öyster Cult. The lyrics reveal secrets of self-discovery and empowerment that every follower should know. Given so much revelation of knowledge, it is up to us to deliver something. «Maiden sacrifice» breaks the sweet rhythm that we had taken based on great rock guitar, getting us into a more Mercyful Fate and Lordi style, to demand that we make the necessary sacrifice.
The softer sound takes center stage again, with a keyboard and rhythm reminiscent of The Nightflight Orchestra, to indicate some more sacrifice that the cult demands with «Lovers die at midnight». This was the first single that came out and made me follow them, in October 2022. The darkness once again looms over our heads with the beginning of the keys in «You know you want it», in which they let us know everything that we can achieve as part of the club. Influences from Ghost and Lordi appear again.
But none of the above could prepare me for what awaited me with «Ra Horaktus.» The title is crystal clear, it is about the Great Sun and the power of it. The most powerful song by far, with a Rammstein-style musical attack, which is complemented by high-pitched King Diamond-style screams. The work closes with a very esoteric ballad «The totem», in which I smell The Cult again and I like it.
The Scandinavian band, made up simply of guitar, drums and keyboard, were seen at the Nordic Noise Festival last May 11 and, it seems, they did not leave the public dissatisfied. The four singles released seem to attack more the AOR and melodic rock sector, but there are certainly hard rock and metal touches at work. A varied work that points in many directions and with a concept that conspiracy fans will love to follow, as we did with Blue Öyster Cult or the beginnings of Ghost. Only time and the Great Sun know how this musical adventure will continue. Quoting the master of the lodge “In the afterlife, when the sun sets, music, the invisible thread of the universe, remains eternally.”
