Que gusto da volver a tener la oportunidad de hablar con las hermanas Fontaine. Muchísimas gracias Melissa y Sarah por estar de nuevo en viriAOR para hablar de vuestro esperadísimo segundo álbum llamado Jade Hearts. Es un verdadero honor para nosotros teneros aquí. 
Lo primero de todo, contadnos como ha sido todo desde que la idea del nuevo trabajo se puso en mente y en marcha.
Mélissa Fontaine: Cuando empezamos «Heaven Outside», ya sabíamos que íbamos a hacer muchos otros álbumes después. Es por eso que comenzamos la grabación de «jade hearts» después del lanzamiento de nuestro primera álbum. No esperábamos terminarlo tan rápido, pero era obvio para nosotros ofrecerlo después de nuestro primer CD. Comenzó con las letras, por supuesto, porque hemos vivido muchas experiencias en la música con Frédéric Slama (AOR) desde nuestra primera reunión. No se podría resumir en un solo álbum. Aparte del negocio de la música, Frédéric y nosotras somos amigos de confianza. Es por eso que tiene mucho que decir acerca de nosotras. Estamos muy emocionadas por su forma de vernos y su manera de poner sus sentimientos en un trozo de papel antes de tocar la melodía.
¿Cuál es la línea de Jade Hearts? ¿Sonará en la misma dirección del debut?
Sarah Fontaine: Somos seres humanos, y todos tenemos motivos muy similares: amor, pasión, tristeza, venganza, redención… No es una excusa para vender las canciones de siempre. No somos superhéroes. Vivimos experiencias que nos podría llevar más alto o sólo nos rompa. Es la mejor manera de aprender. Nuestras canciones son una manera de enseñar a nuestros fans cómo aprovechar el día y disfrutar de la vida. Las letras en este álbum son más precisas y las palabras son más nítidas. Es un punto de inflexión para nosotros. Ahora somos más maduras y listas para crear impacto! Es el momento de Chasing Violets para conquistar nuevos territorios en el mundo Melodic Rock y encontrar nuestro lugar.
MF: «Jade Hearts» sin duda tiene un gran potencial. Es como un corazón que late en el interior de tus manos. Hemos construido un universo para Chasing Violets, llena de músicos de primera clase y canciones de rock. Un álbum con 12 canciones asesinas, sin cargas. Un concentrado de sonido Aor con garra, enormes melodías y letras más nítidas. Un imprescindible para los amantes de la guitarra con riffs locos! Grandes nombres y dúos. Las voces son enormes y de gran alcance! Este nuevo álbum realmente muestra el lado más rockero de la banda. Va a ser una auténtica delicia para los aficionados Aor. Creemos que las personas se sentirán impresionados por ello.
El maestro Slama de nuevo a cargo de la producción, arreglos y composición. Cuéntanos un poco de todo ese proceso. ¿Hay algún toque vuestro en las letras? ¿Cómo ha sido volver a trabajar con él?
SF: No se puede trabajar con alguien durante horas cada día sin compartir sus lados buenos y malos, cuando se tiene personalidades salientes como las nuestras. Tenemos muchos lados diferentes. La gente nos dijo que empujamos a Frédéric a sus límites y le dimos un toque de modern Rock. Todas nuestras pequeñas conversaciones nos llevaron a un álbum hecho a medida, una vez más, pero somos capaces de escribir nuestras propias canciones y vamos a tener tiempo suficiente para probarlo pronto.
MF: Con el tiempo, esto nos lleva a un mejor entendimiento. Esta nueva colaboración fue simplemente perfecta. Incluso si tuviéramos otros negocios en los últimos meses, nuestras mentes estuvieron unidas entre sí para hacer el mejor disco posible. Es una sensación extraña… Es como estar en una isla desierta en tu mente, lejos de todo y que tu cuerpo está viviendo en la actualidad. Tiene su arte bajo la piel y en todas las células de tu cuerpo. Recuerdo estar tan obsesionada por el seguimiento de nuestro concepto original. Tuvimos que quedarnos en la dirección correcta, mientras innovábamos pero ahora estamos convencidos de que hemos hecho un gran trabajo. Estoy particularmente orgullosa de mi obra en el folleto, y descubrireis nuestro universo nuevo pronto. También creo que Frédéric y nosotras hicimos algo más que conocernos unos a otros en un concierto de Toto, fue el comienzo de algo especial y precioso. Los músicos que se unieron a nuestro proyecto a través de los años nos han ayudado a mantener la llama. Estamos tan orgullosas de conoceros chicos, gracias! 
Otra pregunta inevitable, Háblanos de los artistas invitados, vemos que hay algunos que ya participaron en el anterior cd, pero ¿Qué hay de los nuevos nombres?
MF: Hemos tenido la oportunidad de conocer siempre a las personas adecuadas para nuestros proyectos. En este caso, no es sólo talentosos músicos adicionales que cruzaron nuestro camino, sino seres humanos extraordinarios. Algunos de ellos tocaron en nuestro nuevo disco. Hemos mantenido los músicos de nuestro álbum debut! Estamos encantadas de daros el nombre de las personas que nos acompañaron en «Jade Hearts»: Mikael Erlandsson (Last Autumn’s Dream), Bob Harris (Axe), Ken Sandin (Alien, Legends), Tommy Denander (Alice Cooper, Paul Stanley), Paul Sabu (Kidd Glove, Only Child), Göran Edman (Yngwie Malmsteem, Crossfade), members of Hardline & Lionville, Christian Tolle, Eric Ragno, entre muchos otros…
¿Cómo describiríais vuestro lanzamiento para aquel público que aún no os conozca?
SF: ¿Podríais imaginaros un mundo donde el rock melódico estuviera muerto? Bueno, Chasing Violets es nuestra respuesta a las personas que piensan que este tipo de música está pasada de moda. Somos dos jóvenes y si luchamos por Aor es porque vale la pena! Nuestro primer disco «Outside Heaven» se creó para traer de vuelta el Westcoast y el Aor puro. Ha sido muy apreciado por los periodistas y fans por igual. Ahora imagina una diez veces más fuerte el álbum para celebrar Aor puro! «Jade Hearts» es el álbum que necesitábamos para coger el Rock Melódico en el siglo 21. Es como chocar dos edades! Podríamos haber optado por el camino fácil de lanzar un EP con sólo un par de canciones o demos, pero preferimos el camino duro y hacer un álbum completo perfectamente producido desde la A a la Z. Debe tener la fuerza para hacer algo más grande o simplemente salir a la carretera. Yo no podía ver las cosas de manera diferente. El reto es ser capaz de hacer un segundo disco sólido y no para engañar a nuestros fans por esperar demasiado tiempo entre los CD´s.
¿Hay ánimo de salir a la carretera y presentarlo?
MF: Comenzamos con un nuevo plan de batalla… Ahora tenemos un grupo compuesto por grandes músicos, una lista de canciones rockerasy muchas otras sorpresas para los shows en vivo. Así que estamos actualmente planeando una gira, esperamos empezar a finales de este año! No hay necesidad de apresurar nada. Las cosas van a llegar a tiempo. Estamos encantadas de rockear por el mundo, y conocer a todos nuestros fans! Vemos que hay una buena promoción fotográfica donde salís explosivas. ¿Cómo fueron las sesiones? ¿Algún momento divertido?
M.F: Gracias por esas palabras tan bonitas! Para «Outside Heaven», el aspecto musical fue nuestra principal prioridad. Nos quedamos con ganas de soltar una joya y compartirlo con vosotros, los fans del Aor. Somos francesas y nuestra verdadera naturaleza es ser adictos a la moda, es por eso que para «Jade Hearts», trabajamos con un diseñador con talento y bien conocido de los EE.UU. Loanna Haseltine. Ella es increíble. Ella comprendió de inmediato lo que queríamos. Ella compartió con nosotros trajes hermosos de los desfiles de moda que parecían ser hechas a medida. Nos sentimos como princesas en un ambiente acogedor fotografiados por nuestra gran amiga y fotógrafa Stephanie Slama también de los EE.UU.. SF: Es muy difícil para mí entender a la gente que siempre tienen las mismas viejas fotos de sí mismos cada día sin ningún aspecto artístico… creo que no deja lugar para fantasías. Por lo tanto, yo soy el tipo de mujer que prefiere sesiones de fotos profesionales o fotografías simples que tienen un alma! Por lo tanto, teníamos un montón de diversión haciendo estas sesiones de fotos con un equipo profesional. Estamos muy contentas por esta experiencia! Así que fantástico!
Habéis firmado con una nueva etiqueta. ¿Cuáles son las miras para este contrato? ¿Una mayor repercusión mundial?
MF: Cuando estás totalmente involucrada en un lanzamiento de tan ambicioso como este también tiene ideas ambiciosas en mente! Queríamos la mejor promoción posible, una mayor exposición y distribución. Pensamos que sería bueno firmar con una etiqueta famosa. Es natural pensar que un sello grande puede hacer milagros, pero cuando haces negociaciones, hay que tomar la decisión correcta. Puedes ver fácilmente que se puede confiar o no. Cuando nos reunimos con Freddie Allen (AOR Records), había algo diferente. Él era un verdadero profesional y un verdadero gerente moderno. Sin duda tenía excelentes comunicaciones y realmente apreciamos su forma de trabajar. Ser parte de este sello sueco es la oportunidad que necesitábamos.
Nos gustaría conoceros un poco más a fondo. Como por ejemplo plato de comida preferido o hobbies. ¿Qué gustos musicales os han influenciado en vuestra vida?
SF: Acerca de nuestras influencias musicales, no podríamos vivir sin nuestros clásicos (Journey, Survivor, Foreigner, Kansas, Toto …), y siempre nos encanta descubrir sonidos más recientes (Houston, Stan Bush, Crossfade, Chris Ousey, Mecca …). Nos encanta la comida de las diferentes partes de nuestro origen étnico, como la comida picante de la India, entre otras y nos encanta los deportes extremos! También somos dos personas muy creativas, intelectuales, espirituales y mujeres autodidactas. Soy aficionada a la literatura y escribo durante mi tiempo libre. También me encanta la moda el diseño o el arte en general. Mélissa es una apasionada del diseño gráfico, la fotografía y modelado, entre otros.

What a joy it is to have the chance to speak with the Fontaine sisters. Thanks a lot, Melissa & Sarah for being again with us, at ViriAor, to speak of your much anticipated 2nd album “Jade Hearts”. It’s such an honor having you here.
- First of all, tell us a bit of what has happened since the first idea of the 2nd album appeared in your minds. Mélissa Fontaine: As we started “Outside Heaven”, we already knew that we would make many other albums then. That’s why we started the recording of “Jade Hearts” after the release of our 1st album. We didn’t expect to finish it so fast, but it was obvious for us to carry on after our 1st CD. It started with the writing of course, ‘cause we lived many experiences in music with Frédéric Slama (AOR) since our 1st meeting. It couldn’t be summarized in just one album. Apart from the music business, Frédéric and us are trusted friends. That’s why he has a lot to say about us. We are so touched by his way of seeing us and his way to put his feelings on a piece of paper before playing the melody.
- What is the guiding line in Jade Hearts? Will it go on the same direction the debut album did? Sarah Fontaine: We are human beings, and we all have quite similar motivations: Love, passion, sadness, revenge, redemption… It’s not an excuse to sell the same old songs. We are not super heroes. We live experiences that could take us higher or just break us. It’s the better way to learn. Our songs are a way to teach our fans how to seize the day and enjoy life. The lyrics in this album are more precise and the words are sharper. It’s a turning point for us. We are now more mature and ready to make an impact! It’s the time for Chasing Violets to conquer new territories in the Melodic Rock world to find our place. M.F: “Jade Hearts” definitely has a huge potential. It’s like a beating heart inside your hands. We built another universe for Chasing Violets, full of top notch musicians and rock songs. A full album with 12 killer songs, without fillers. A concentrate of punchy Aor sound, tremendous melodies and sharper lyrics. A must-have for crazy guitar riffs lovers! Great names and outstanding duets. The vocals are huge and powerful! This new album really shows the rockier side of the band. It’ll be an absolute treat for Aor fans. We think that people will be impressed by “Jade Hearts”.
- One again, the great Frédéric Slama is in charge of production, arrangements & composition. Tell us a bit how that process works, is there any input from you two, for example in the lyrics? How it’s been working with him for the second time? S.F: You can’t work with someone during hours every day without sharing your good and bad sides, when you have outgoing personalities like ours. We have many different sides. People told us that we pushed Frédéric to his limits and gave him a modern Rock touch. All our small-talks led us to a tailor made album once again, but we are able to write our own songs and we’ll have enough time to prove it soon. M.F: With time, it leads us to a better understanding. This new collaboration was just perfect. Even if we had other businesses during the last few months, our minds were linked together to make the best album possible. You know it’s a strange sensation… It’s like being on a desert island in your mind, far away from everything your body is living in the present time. You have your art under your skin and in every cells of your body. I remember being so obsessed by the follow up of our original concept. We had to stay in the right direction while innovating, but we’re now convinced that we did a great job. I’m particularly proud of my artwork in the booklet and you’ll discover our new universe soon. I also think that Frédéric and us made more than just meeting each other at a Toto concert, it was the beginning of something special and precious. Musicians that joined our project over the years helped us to keep the flame. We are so proud to know such guys, thank you!
- Another unavoidable question, guests musicians, some of them repeat from the first album but, are there any new names in the list? M.F: We had the chance to always meet the right persons for our projects. In that case it’s not only extra talented musicians that crossed our way, but extraordinary human beings. Some of them played on our new records. We kept the musicians from our debut album in mind! - How would you describe this new record, especially to those whom do not know of your music? S.F: Could you imagine a world where Melodic Rock would be dead? Well, Chasing Violets is our answer to people who think that this kind of music is old-fashioned. We are two young ladies and if we fight for Aor it’s because it worth it! Our debut album “Outside Heaven” has been created to bring back to life Westcoast music and pure Aor. It has been really appreciated by journalists and fans alike. Now, I let you imagine a ten times stronger album to celebrate pure Aor! “Jade Hearts” is the album we needed to take Melodic Rock higher in the modern 21st century. It’s like two ages colliding! We could have chosen the easy path to release an EP with just a few songs or demos, but we preferred the hard way and do a full album perfectly produced from A to Z. You must have the strength to do something bigger or just hit the road. It’s the name of the game. I couldn’t see things differently. The challenge is to be able to make a 2nd solid album and not to deceive our fans by waiting too long between CD’s.
- Are there any plans to defend it live?M.F: We start with a new battle plan…We have now a permanent backup band composed of great musicians, a rockier set list and many other surprises for live shows. So we’re currently planning a tour, we hope to start it at the end of this year! No need to rush anything. Things will come in time. We’re thrilled to rock the world, and meet all our fans!! - We love the promo pics, both of you look awesome, were there funny moments at the shooting? M.F: Thank you for the nice words! For “Outside Heaven”, the musical aspect was our top priority. We were looking forward to release a jewel and to share it with you, Aor fans. We are French and our true nature is to be fashion addicts, that’s why for “Jade Hearts”, we worked with a talented and well-known fashion designer from the USA Loanna Haseltine. She is amazing. She immediately understood what we wanted. She shared with us beautiful outfits from fashion shows that seemed to be tailor made ones. We felt as princesses in a cosy atmosphere made by our great friend and photographer Stephanie Slama also from the USA. S.F: It’s pretty hard for me to understand people that always take the same old pictures of themselves every day without any artistic aspect… I think that it leaves no place for fantasies. So, I’m the kind of woman that prefers professional photo sessions or simple photos that have a soul! So, we had a lot of fun doing these photo sessions with a professional team. We are really delighted by this experience!! So fantastic!!
- You signed with a new label, what are your expectations for this record deal? More international exposure? M.F: When you are totally involved in such an ambitious release like “Jade Hearts”, you also have ambitious ideas in mind! We wanted the better promotion possible, a biggest exposure and distribution. We thought that it would be judicious to sign with a famous label. It’s natural to think that a big label could make miracles, but when you’re doing negotiations, you become able to make the right choice. You can easily see who you can trust or not. When we met Freddie Allen (Aor Records), there was something different. He was a real professional and a real modern label manager. We definitely had great communications and we really appreciate his way of working. Being part of this Swedish label is the opportunity we needed.
- We would like to know you better, for example what is your favorite food or your hobbies, also which are your musical influences? S.F: About our musical influences, we couldn’t live without our classics (Journey, Survivor, Foreigner, Kansas, Toto…), and we always love discovering more recent sounds (Houston, Stan Bush, Crossfade, Chris Ousey, Mecca…). We love food from the different sides of our ethnic background, like spicy Indian food among others and we love extreme sports! We are also two very creative persons, intellectual, spiritual and self-taught women. I’m fond of literature and I write during my freetime. I also love fashion designing or art in general. Mélissa is passionate by graphic design, photography and modeling among others.
