Lo primero de todo agradecer a Jose Luis de Vigilante la mediación para poder entrevistarte y que los fans de España conozcan un poco más de State of Salazar. Después darte las gracias a ti también Marcus Nygren por a tender a viriAOR, es un placer tener aquí.
¿Cómo nació la idea de formar State Of Salazar? ¿Cuál es la historia del nombre de la banda?
Empezó conmigo escribiendo algunas canciones en el piano, que no encajaba en mi otra banda de 8 point Rose, que es más una banda de metal. Y yo había conocido a algunos nuevos amigos en la academia de música en Malmö donde estudio, que compartían mi devoción por este tipo de música. Desde que era pequeño siempre he tenido una cosa para la formación musical y del montaje en películas como Rocky, y también soy un gran fan de bandas como Queen, Journey, Toto, Chicago y Survivor. Esta era la música que hace mucho tiempo quería escribir y decidimos juntarnos y crear un poco de música rock Arena buena fuera.
El nombre de la banda es en realidad el resultado de una broma interna de la banda, y preferimos mantener esa broma para nosotros mismos. Todo lo que puedo decir es que no tiene nada que ver con la música y no tiene un significado más profundo. Simplemente creo que suena bien y, por supuesto, nos recuerda una gran carcajada que una vez compartimos.
Acabáis de publicar “Lost My Way” con siete temas, ¿cuál es el motivo por el cual no es un álbum completo?
«Lost My Way» es en realidad un EP con cuatro temas grabados en esta primavera. Sin embargo, hemos decidido añadir tres bonus tracks, que fueron grabados a principios del 2010. La grabación de este EP comenzó como proyecto de la escuela que f pensamos, ¿por qué no matar dos pájaros de un tiro y grabar nuestro primer lanzamiento oficial? Y nos dimos cuenta de que seria mejor empezar con esta cantidad de canciones cuándo publicados por nosotros mismos y luego ver si hay alguna etiqueta interesados en firmar con nosotros para un álbum completo.
¿No hay ninguna discográfica que se haya interesado hasta ahora por vosotros?
Estamos esperando saber de algunas discográficas que quieran firmar con nosotros y vamos a trabajar duro para que esto suceda! Estamos encantados de ser capaces de llegar a un público más amplio, y estamos deseando estar en la carretera para satisfacer a nuestros fans europeos. Esperemos que alguien crea en nosotros y hacer ese sueño realidad. Si conoces a alguien a dar mi número, ¡jaja!
Lo he oído por spotify y me parece un disco de gran altura de rock melódico con muchos guiños de la época dorada del Aor. ¿Cuáles son tus influencias a la hora de crear tú música?
Bueno, como he mencionado antes son mis influencias más obvias como el principal compositor de la banda: Formación, montaje de música, Queen, Journey, Toto, Chicago y Survivor. Pero ya que los arreglos de la música son como una banda, hay un montón de otras influencias. Todo lo que vaya entre el Pop y el Rock que hace que tus pies quieran bailar. En Malmö, Suecia, mucha gente llame a nuestro género de música Slick, y algunos otros lo llaman AOR o la música influenciada por los años 80. Le invitamos a llamarlo como quieras, pero nosotros preferimos el término Arena Pop/Rock. Nosotros somos principalmente una banda de Pop / Rock que quiere la música sea para los grandes estadios y que la gente se sienta bien!
Suecia está viviendo una eclosión fantástica de bandas melódicas en los últimos años. ¿Hay alguna que te llame poderosamente la atención?
Sí, estamos muy identificados con muchas grandes bandas de aquí. Soy muy aficionado a HEAT y también me gustan grupos como The Ark, Salem Al Fakir y mis amigos del grupo Hosford. Y por supuesto soy un gran fan de Europe que me ha inspirado mucho desde la infancia.
¿Nos puedes contar detalles de la composición del álbum y que quieres contarnos con las letras?
Muy bien, con “When Heroes Fall”lo que queríamos hacer es una canción épica inspirada en canciones como «Bohemian Rhapsody» y «Life On Mars», pero con nuestro toque personal, por supuesto. La canción es acerca de la mierda de problemas que ha habido en mi familia y que se preocupa mucho mi madre, y he escribí la letra dándole un enfoque para consolarla.
“The Blind Man”habla de lo mucho que nos gusta Toto. Y con las letras de esta canción yo quería sacar mi ira hacia las personas literalitas religiosos parroquiales y pensé que la mejor manera de hacerlo era darles con su propia medicina. Pero en vez de predicar la mierda, yo canto sobre ello dsdee su propio corazón.
“Confession” es acerca de las dificultades del amor no correspondido y de dar el paso y enamorarse de nuevo. Es una balada y queríamos que la parte solista sonara como algo que Chicago podría haber hecho con la sección de viento y la función de solo de guitarra fuera heroica.
«Lost My Way With You» es otra canción de amor, sobre cómo el mundo se pone patas arriba con la chica adecuada, o con la chica equivocada. Y con esta canción quería hacer el final perfecto para un concierto, influenciado por Journey una canción en particular de The Ark llamada Calleth.
«I Believe In You» es la primera canción que pusimos juntos como banda y es simplemente una canción alegre pop de creer en que tus sueños pueden hacerse realidad.
«Lie To Me» es nuestra manera de hacer una balada y es un dúo con un amiga nuestra, la talentosa cantante Ana Latt Nyboe. Las letras están inspiradas en algunos sentimientos que tuve problemas con la finalización de una relación anterior habla sobre antes de la ruptura.
Y, por último, «Adrián» es un homenaje a las viejas películas de Rocky y se ocupa de la idea de encontrar la chica adecuada para luchar.
Una de las cosas más importantes. ¿Dónde podemos hacernos con una copia de esta joya para que nuestros lectores vayan a comprarlo?
«Lost My Way» por desgracia, no se venderá en cd ya que aún no tenemos un contrato discográfico. Pero puedes comprar el disco en iTunes, Amazon y E-música o se puede escuchar en Spotify.
Una pregunta inevitable que no puedo dejar de hacerte. ¿Te han dicho alguna vez que tienes cierto parecido cantando a Toby Hitchcock de Pride of Lions?
En realidad, no. ¿Crees que sueno como él? Para ser honesto, nunca he oído hablar de él o de Pride of Lions. Espero que él sea un gran cantante? Haha si hay alguna similitud, es sin duda porque será el caso que tenemos la voz igual o las mismas influencias en la música.

First of all thanks to Jose Luis of Vigilante Radio for mediation to interview you so that the Spanish fans know a little more about State of Salazar. Thank you Marcus to attend to viriAOR, it’s a pleasure to have you here with us.
How was the idea of forming State Of Salazar? What is the history of the band name?
It started with me writing some songs on the piano which didn’t fit my other band 8-Point Rose, who is more of a metal band. And I had met some new friends at the music academy in Malmö where I study, who shared my devotion for this kind of music. Since I was a little kid I’ve always had a thing for training montage music in movies like Rocky, and I’m also a great fan of bands like Queen, Journey, Toto, Chicago and Survivor. This was music that I’d for a long time wanted to write and we just decided to get together and create some good Arena Rock music out of it.
The band name is actually the result of an internal band joke, and we prefer to keep that joke for ourselves. All that I can say is that it has nothing to do with the music and has no deeper meaning. We just think it sounds good and of course, reminds us of a great laugh we once shared.
You have just published «Lost My Way» with seven subjects, what is the reason why not a full album?
“Lost My Way” is actually an Ep with four tracks recorded this spring. But we decided to add three bonus tracks, which were recorded way earlier back in 2010. The recording of this Ep started out as school project were we thought; why not hit two birds in one stone and record our first official release? And we figured it could be nice to start with this amount of songs when to publish it by ourselves and then see if there’s any labels interested in signing us for a full album.
Is there any label interested for you recording?
We’re hoping to hear from some labels wanting to sign us and we will work hard to make that happen! We’re thrilled to be able to reach out to a wider audience, and we’re longing for the road and to meet our European fans. Let’s hope that some one believes in us and will make that dream come true. If you know anyone give them my number, haha!
I’ve heard your music on spotify and I think it is an album of melodic rock tall with many nods to the golden age of Aor. What are your influences when creating your music?
Well, as I mentioned earlier are my most obvious influences as the main songwriter in the band: Training montage music, Queen, Journey, Toto, Chicago and Survivor. But since we arrange the music together as a band there’s a lot of other influences too. Everything between Pop and Rock that makes your feet want to dance. In Malmö and Sweden many people call our genre Slick music, and some others call it AOR or music influenced by the 80’s. You’re welcome to call it whatever you want to, but we prefer the term Arena Pop/Rock. We are mainly a Pop/Rock band who wants the music to fit the big Arenas and make people feel good!
Sweden is experiencing a fantastic explossion of melodic bands in recent years. Is there any band that powerfully calls your attention?
Yes we are really spoiled with many great bands here. I’m very fond of H.E.A.T and I also like bands like The Ark, Salem Al Fakir and my friends in Hosford Group. And of course I’m a big fan of Europe that has inspired me a lot since childhood.
Can you elaborate on details of the composition of the album and to tell us something about the lyrics?
Alright, with “When Heroes Fall” we wanted to do an epic song inspired by songs like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Life On Mars”, but with our own touch of course. The lyrics is about some shit within my family which troubled my mother a lot, and I wrote the lyrics in an approach to comfort her.
“The Blind Man” show’s how much we like Toto I think. And with the lyrics to this song I wanted to take out my anger at parochial literalist religious people and I thought that the best way to do it was to hit them with their own medicine. But instead of preaching shit, I sing about following your own heart.
“Confession” is about the difficulties of unrequited love and to take the step and fall in love again. It’s a ballad were we wanted the solo part to sound like something Chicago could have done with the wind section and the heroic solo guitar feature.
«Lost My Way With You» is another love song, about how the world is turned upside down with the right girl, or with the wrong girl. And with this song we wanted to make the perfect ending to a concert, influenced by Journey and a particular song by The Ark called Calleth you, cometh I.
“I Believe In You” is the first song we ever put together as a band and is simply a happy Pop song about believing in that your dreams can come true.
“Lie To Me” is our way of doing a power ballad and it’s a duet with a friend of ours, the talented singer Anne Lätt Nyboe. The lyrics are inspired by some feelings that I struggled with during the ending period of an earlier relationship before the break up.
And finally, «Adrian» is a tribute to the old Rocky movies, and deals with the idea to find the right girl to fight for.
One of the most important things. Where we can get a copy of this gem so that our readers will buy it?
“Lost My Way” will unfortunately not be released as a cd because we do not yet have a record deal. But you can buy the record from iTunes, Amazon and E-music or you can listen to it on Spotify.
An inevitable question. Have you ever been told you have some resemblance singing Toby Hitchcock of Pride of Lions?
Actually, no. Do you think I sound like him? To be honest, I’ve actually never heard him or Pride of Lions for that matter. I hope he’s a great singer? Haha if there is any similarity, it is surely the case that we have the same vocal or music influences.

Estamos en Italia, lugar Aorero por antonomasia, nos adentramos en los suburbios y nos encontramos a una banda que empezó practicando un hard con fuerza en sus inicios y que después de un proceso de cambio en la formación deciden tirar a un público más maduro practicando un Aor/ metal lleno de teclados y mucha melodía.
