En primer lugar Bruno quería agradecerte tú amabilidad por atender a viriAOR desde España. Es un honor poder entrevistarte.
-La primera pregunta es casi obligatoria Bruno. ¿Cuál es el estado actual de D2? Hace ya un par de años desde la edición de “Revolve”, pero también sabemos que en D2 os tomáis el tiempo necesario para obtener los mejores resultados ¿Estáis trabajando en material nuevo?
B.R. Nada como empezar con una pregunta difícil XD, supongo que D2 está actualmente “en pausa”. No
estamos trabajando en material nuevo. Si por mí fuera ya habríamos editado uno, sino dos, nuevos lanzamientos a estas alturas, pero como la mayoría ya sabéis, las dinámicas en este grupo son bastante complejas. ¡Ni yo mismo acabo de entenderlas!
– ¿Podrías contarnos proyectos, planes o ideas que tienes en mente ya sea Con D2 o por separado? Ahora mismo, estoy concentrado en proyectos no musicales, pero, en cuanto a movidas musicales siempre estoy mezclando, que es algo que me encanta.
Justo acabo de mezclar el CD de la nueva banda de Paul Laine: Dark Horse, y pronto vamos a empezar a lanzar ideas junto a Tony Harnell para un nuevo álbum de Westworld que verá la luz en 2014. Sé que va a ser extraño hacer este CD sin mi colega Mark pero vamos a esforzarnos al máximo por hacer un gran álbum. ¿En cuanto a D2? Me temo que hay que esperar a que el teléfono suene XD.
Recuerdo especialmente esos geniales discos de Westworld con Tony Harnell y Mark Reale… Imagínate que baja el genio del Rock y te ofrece la posibilidad de colaborar con quien tu prefieras en la historia del Rock, ¿cuál sería tu lista?
Uf, podría darte nombres hasta el infinito, pero algunos con los que me encantaría trabajar serían Max Martin, Greg Alexander, Ryan Tedder, Greg Wells, Mutt Lange, Rick Springfield, Adam Schmitt, Bryan Adams, Steven Tyler…
– Volviendo a “Revolve”, este ha sido un disco importante, tras muchos años sin publicar nada, el regreso de Ted, y las geniales críticas cosechadas. Para mí es el álbum en el que mejor se integran el Party Rock que os hizo grandes y el sonido más Modern Rock de la época con Paul Lane ¿Cómo se gestó este álbum?
Decir que fue premeditado es poco. Steve y yo nos juntamos y hablamos sobre hacia donde queríamos ir con el disco, y cuando ambos estuvimos de acuerdo, empezamos el proceso.
¿Qué queráis exactamente plasmar con este trabajo?
Quisimos contentar a nuestros fans, que llevaban esperando un nuevo CD muchísimo tiempo y a la vez queríamos estar satisfechos con los temas, la producción etc… Queríamos mezclar de alguna manera el pasado y el presente. ¡No fue un objetivo fácil!
– ¿Satisfecho con la respuesta en general de la gente? ¿En la carretera funcionó bien?
Hasta cierto punto. A nuestros fans de toda la vida les encantó el disco e incluso llegamos alguna gente nueva con él y estamos encantados con eso, pero hubiera estado bien tener algo más de alcance mediático. Hoy en día un nuevo lanzamiento está en las estanterías unas 6 semanas y luego, puf! Desaparece…
– Como productor y como miembro de D2 ¿Qué diferencias notas entre esos magníficos finales 80 y principios de los años 90 con vuestros dos primeros trabajos, auténticas joyas (para un servidor que creció con ellos) a esta época que vivimos de internet?
Jajaja, muchas diferencias. ¡Para empezar ahora somos bastante más viejos! XD y ahora la música es gratis y muy pocos músicos llegan a ganarse la vida haciendo aquello que aman. En aquel entonces aun cuando las compañías de discos eran avariciosas y corruptas, un músico o una banda tenían cierta oportunidad de “conseguirlo”. Además los días de los grandes estudios están casi acabados, cada vez quedan menos y menos. Cualquiera con Pro Tools y un portátil cree que sabe lo que hace, y la calidad de la música se resiente de ello. No está bien… Todo esto de la “música gratis” es un error en todos los sentidos. Escribir una buena canción es muy difícil, grabarla y mezclarlo como dios manda lo es aún más. La gente no entiende que eso no debe devaluarse, debería ser apreciado y protegido y los artistas deberían ser bien compensados, podría seguir con el tema indefinidamente pero creo que ya os hacéis una idea…
-Sabemos que eres muy activo en redes sociales como Twitter y Facebook, ¿crees que son útiles para promover tu música y mantener el contacto con los fans?
Es lo que es, y no va a cambiar así que puedes elegir aceptarlo y usarlo para lo que es útil o desaparecer… Yo creo que está muy bien para lanzar tu mensaje o mantenerte en contacto con amigos y fans, pero eso es todo.
– En los créditos del disco aparecen muchos nombres ilustres como Mitch Malloy, Paul Laine haciendo coros entre otros. Está claro que por lo que he visto en Firefest y he leído, Paul es como tú hermano y seguís manteniendo una grandísima relación. ¿También habría alguna posibilidad de ver a Andy Timmons otra vez con vosotros? ¿Qué tal es vuestra relación?
Mitch es mi hermanos y siempre estamos hablando de algo juntos así que eso es definitivamente posible, igual con Paul… ¿Con Andy? Hemos hablado de hacer algunos shows juntos en un futuro pero nunca hemos dicho nada de hacer un disco ni nada por el estilo. ¡Sospecho que le molaría darle duro a la distorsión y liarla una vez más!
-Por cierto le hice la misma pregunta a Jimi Jamison y me dijo… “Imposible verme con Survivor de nuevo” Y ahí está hehehe.
– Nos gustaría saber cuáles son los hobbies, deportes, comida y manías que tenga Bruno Ravel. Todo lo que se pueda contar y esté fuera del escenario.
Hoy en día me concentro en mi familia y en mantenerme libre de estrés, lo que es difícil. En cuanto a intereses, soy un cocinillas total, me encanta cocinar e ir a restaurantes molones etc… Soy muy fan de los deportes también sobretodo Football y Basketball y me encanta ir en moto, adoro pasar tiempo con mis amigos y familia. Ya sé que suena bastante aburrido para un tío que una década atrás era el polo opuesto, pero esto es en lo que ando hoy en día…
– Y por supuesto la anécdota más cachonda que hayáis tenido con Danger Danger. (Me huele que será en Japón).
Curiosamente no tuvimos demasiados momentos tipo Spinal Tap, pero cuando ocurrían generalmente tenían que ver con las pistas grabadas que usábamos en directo. En su momento eran sobretodo efectos de sonido y coros, y hoy en día son efectos y teclados, ¡pero hubo momentos en los que no íbamos todos a una, si me entiendes!
– Podrías decirle unas palabras a los muchísimos fans españoles y si tenéis pensado venir a tocar por nuestra tierra en un futuro cercano.
Ahh.. ¡¡España!! ¡Os queremos un montón y agradecemos muchísimo todo el apoyo que nos brindáis! ¡Volveremos! Estamos continuamente recibiendo propuestas para venir y tocar ¡¡ así que estoy bastante seguro que más pronto que tarde volveremos Rock on!

First of all, Bruno, we want to thank you for your kindness in attending us at ViriAOR from Spain. It’s truly an honor to be able to interview you.
Our first question is mandatory: What’s the actual situation in D2? It’s been some time since the release of Revolve in 2009, but we also know that you guys always take the time to obtain the finest results. Are you working on new material?
B.R. Nothing like starting with a tough question! =] D2 is on «hiatus» right now I guess. We are not working on new material. If it were up to me, we’d have had one, if not two more releases out by now, but as most of you know by now, the dynamics of this band are quite complex. Even I can’t seem to figure them out!
What projects, plans or ideas will we see you involved with, D2 or by yourself?
Right now, I am concentrating on some projects outside of music, but as far as music related stuff, I am always mixing, which is something I love to do. I just finished mixing Paul Laine’s new band «Dark Horse» Cd, and will start throwing ideas
together for a new Westworld album with Tony Harnell that will come out in 2014. I know it will be strange making this Cd without my buddy Mark, but we will do our best to carry on and make a great album. As for D2,? I guess I’ll have to wait for the phone to ring.. lol I recall with special affection those amazing Westworld records with Tony Harnell and Mark

About Revolve again, it has been an important record, marking a comeback from so many years in silence, Ted Poley coming back home, and the awesome response it collected. To me it is the record which blends your classic Party Rock sound with the Modern Rock from Paul Lane’s epoque in a most natural way. How was the coming alltogether of all this different factors?
It was a conscious effort to say the least. Steve and I had a meeting and discussed where we wanted to go with this record, and when we both agreed, we started the process.
And what did you wanted the record to represent?
We wanted to make out fans happy who had been waiting for a new CD from us for so long, and at the same time, We wanted to be happy with the songs/production, etc… We wanted to somehow fuse the past and the present. It wasn’t an easy goal to obtain!
Are you satisfied with the public reaction? Did it work well on tour?
Somewhat. Our hardcore fans loved the record, and we did reach some new people with it and we were thrilled with that, but it would have been nice to get some more exposure. The «shelf life» of a new release in this day and age is approximately 6 weeks and then.. Poof! gone…
As a producer and as a D2 member, what differences would you say there are between those glory days from the 80’s & 90’s when you released your first two albums, true masterpieces to me that I grew up with, and this internet times we are living?
Haha.. so many differences. For one, we’re a lot older today!.. lol and now, music is free and very few musicians get to make a living doing what they love. Back then, even though the record companies were greedy and corrupt, at least a musician, or band had a decent shot at «making it,» Also, the days of the big studio are almost gone. There are fewer and fewer out there. Everyone has Pro Tools and a laptop and thinks they know what they’re doing, and the music quality reflects that. Not good… The whole «free music» thing for me just is wrong in every way. It’s really hard to write a good song and really hard to record it well and mix it well. People just don’t get that. It shouldn’t be devalued. It should be treasured and protected and artists should be compensated, and compensated well. I could go on and on with this, but you get the picture.
We also know you are quite active in social media, such as Twitter & Facebook, do you find those useful, to promote your music or staying in contact with the fans?
It is what it is and it’s not going away, so we can either choose to embrace it and use it for what it’s worth, or disappear… I find it great for getting the message out and staying in touch with friends and fans, but thats as far as it goes.
Legends such as Mitch Malloy and Paul Lane appear credited in the album, and for what we’ve seen on your last two gigs in Firefest, you have a close relationship with both of them, you’ve said a number of times that Paul is like a brother. Is there a chance for a future collaboration with them or for example Andy Timmons?
Mitch is my bro, and we talk all the time about doing something together, so that’s a definite possibility. Paul as well… as far as Andy,? we’ve spoken about maybe doing some shows in the future, but haven’t really discussed doing a record or anything like that. I do suspect that he’d love to crank up the distortion and let it rip one more time!
We asked the same thing to Jimi Jamison and he said it was “impossible to see me again with Survivor”, but there he is hehehe…
We would like to know what are your hobbies and tastes beyond music, such as sports, foods etc… Everything Ravel far from the stage.
These days, my focus is on family, and being stress free, which is difficult. As far as interests,? I’m a huge «foodie,» love tocook and go out to cool restaurants etc, etc. I’m a huge sports fan too, especially Football and Basketball. I love to ride my motorcycle, and love spending time with my friends and family. Quite boring, I know for someone who was the polar opposite a decade ago, but that’s what’s up for me these days…
Of Course there’s the obvious question of your craziest Spinal Tap-ish moment (must’ve been in japan??)
Funny enough, there weren’t that many «Spinal Tap-ish» moments, but the ones that happened usually involved something going wrong with the backing tracks that we use live. Back in the day it was mostly sound effects and backing vocals, and
these days it’s keyboards and sound effects, but there were a few instances where we weren’t all «playing together» if you know what I mean!
Finally can you send some words to the many fans you have in Spain & tell us if there’s even the slightest chance that you guys can come visit us?
Ahh.. Spain!! Love you guys so much, and so appreciate all the support you’ve given us! We will be back! We are always fielding offers to come there and play, and I’m pretty confident that we’ll be back there sooner than later!!
