La banda de hard rock melódico procedente de Serbia, ¡The Big Deal! Llega hoy para hablarnos por primera vez de sus fechas por España , y contarnos un poquito más como está la banda preparando su viaje musical fuera de sus fronteras.
El guitarrista, compositor Srdjan Brankovic y su esposa Nevena conocieron a la cantante Ana Nikolic, fue entonces cuando
«The Big Deal», con dos destacadas vocalistas, Ana Nikolic y Nevena Brankovic (que también es una teclista/pianista muy hábil), ofrecieron un sonido pegadizo que atraería a una amplia franja de fans del rock y el metal, desde amantes de la música melódica, rock y hard rock a los del metal sinfónico y del power.
Rompiendo con estereotipos decidí embarcarme y hablar con la banda para introducir aún más su exitosa banda en mi lista habitual.
Contacté con ellos y con esa amabilidad que tienen con su público conversamos y aquí encontrarás lo que nos han contado.
¿No hay muchas bandas de hard rock serbio que hayan sido conocidas fuera de vuestro pais? Al menos dentro de este estilo , lo que me lleva a la primera pregunta, sobre todo me surgió cuando oí hablar de vosotros por primera vez .
Srdjan: Eso es lo que me preguntan todo el tiempo. Y sí, es cierto que ninguna banda local logró abrirse camino fuera de nuestras fronteras. Muchos lo lograron en la ex-Yugoslavia. Sin embargo, hay algunas excepciones. Por ejemplo, Ana Popovic, guitarrista de blues, es una mujer serbia de la que mucho se ha oído hablar, aunque lleva mucho tiempo viviendo en EE.UU. También hay algunos grandes innovadores que no son de Serbia, pero son de origen serbio. Por ejemplo, Aleksandar Živojinović (Alex Lifeson) de RUSH es de origen serbio. Aunque nació después de que sus padres se mudaran de Serbia a Estados Unidos. Del mundo de la ciencia, Nikola Tesla era serbio.
Así que se podría decir que sois como unos pioneros …
¿Cómo nace la idea de esta banda y este sonido?
Ana: Durante el período del coronavirus, dado que pasaban mucho tiempo en el estudio, Srdjan, Nevena y Marko comenzaron a componer música nueva y a grabar versiones para una nueva banda/proyecto. Me uní a ellos poco después. Alessandro estaba buscando un compositor y escuchó algunas demos de Srdjan, se las a sugirió a Frontiers y les gustó todo el «paquete». Luego fuimos junto con Frontiers a trabajar en el primer álbum y juntos encontramos el nombre de la banda: The Big Deal.
Pues sin duda fue una idea muy acertada y un tiempo muy bien aprovechado.
¿Habéis tomado otros estilos o bandas como referencia?
Srdjan: Cuando hablamos del primer álbum, personalmente traté de hacer canciones que me gustaría escuchar como fan. He sido coleccionista y fan de todos los estilos de metal/rock desde que era un niño. A mí mismo me gustaría tener un álbum como este en mi colección. Nevena actualizó mi vida 100% RnR con conocimientos de la academia, algunas soluciones de música clásica e incluso jazz, cuando hablo de armonía. Además de cantar, creo que también dejó una gran huella en las canciones con teclados. Se convirtió en profesora en una escuela de música muy temprano. Por otro lado, Ana lleva años cantando en un «Abba Tribute» muy profesional y lo hace genial, me impresiona cuando la veo en directo. Eso nos inspiró a nosotros, los compositores, a agregar ese elemento armónico a las canciones, con 2 voces femeninas. Siempre me ha gustado el color y la emoción de su voz, ya que conozco a Ana desde hace casi 10 años y solíamos grabar en mi estudio en el pasado.
Siguiendo esa línea y esas ideas siempre hay una dinámica establecida a la hora de componer .
¿Quién lleva las riendas en la composición de los temas?
Ana: Srdjan. Con la ayuda de Nevena. Alessandro también ayudó con una canción.
Srdjan: Ese fue el caso con el primer álbum. Además de esa canción que coescribimos con Alessandro, hicimos todo lo demás nosotros mismos. Pero eso no significa que siempre será así. Estamos abiertos a cualquier tipo de cooperación, si es inspiradora.
Y llegó el lanzamiento del disco, un disco que si me permitís, parece un bebé hecho con mucho Amor..
¿cómo ha sido la respuesta que habéis recibido por parte de los fans?
Srdjan: Impresionante!! Estamos realmente encantados y agradecidos con todas aquellas personas que empezaron a seguirnos. Es una sensación fenomenal cuando te das cuenta de que hay tanta gente que es igual que nosotros, que tiene los mismos gustos que nosotros. Nos identificamos con ellos y ellos se identifican con nosotros. Es el momento en el que te das cuenta de que no estás solo en este planeta. Estamos muy agradecidos con Frontiers, porque realmente lo hicieron todo posible. Trabajar con una discográfica así es un «sueño hecho realidad» para a nosotros.
Y vosotros como banda ¿Os sorprendió o esperabais ese recibimiento?
Ana: En realidad, no lo pensamos para nada. Disfrutamos el proceso de hacer el álbum. Grabamos los videos nosotros mismos y disfrutamos cada segundo. Planearlo junto con Frontiers fue divertido. Nos encanta hacer esto, incluso puedo decir que somos adictos, adictos a la música… independientemente de los resultados y la respuesta. Y para hacer las cosas aún más grandes, la respuesta fue excelente y nos dio aún más voluntad.
Creo que esa actitud dice mucho de vosotros y de vuestro proceso como músicos, porque yo también creo que disfrutando es como se dan los mejores resultados.
Sé que sois una máquina muy precisa de creación y evolución y por ello me gustaría saber,
¿Cuándo estará listo el nuevo material?
Ana: ¡Estamos trabajando duro en ello!
De eso estoy segura y esperando con inquietud.
¿Seguirá la dinámica del álbum anterior, o estás buscando algo diferente?
Srdjan: Todavía es demasiado pronto para hablar de ello.
Ha habido comentarios sobre un posible álbum de versiones. ¿Está en tus planes?
Ana: En un momento, Frontiers tuvo algunas ideas. Pero, creo que eso no sucederá. Incluso creo que habrá muchas menos versiones oficiales. Nos centraremos en nuestro material original.
Anunciar la participación de la banda en un festival como Rock Imperium en España fue una grata sorpresa. ¿Cómo llegó la propuesta?
Srdjan: Me desperté y encontré una invitación por correo electrónico de la organización del festival. Todos estábamos muy contentos cuando recibimos una invitación de la organización «Madness Live» para actuar. Al igual que cuando recibimos un correo electrónico de la gerencia de «TheKissCruise». Cuando fuimos a Los Ángeles, la gente de la gerencia nos dijo que vieron nuestros videos y decidieron invitarnos. ¡Genial! Es una respuesta que es, en cierto modo, la corona de nuestro trabajo en el primer disco con Frontiers.
Imagino la alegría y el reconocimiento que supone que un festival así cuente con vosotros, dicho sea de paso , yo soy de esa ciudad y por supuesto allí estaré.
¿Qué esperas de esa fecha tan especial y qué pueden ver los fans en el festival?
Ana: Esperamos divertirnos mucho. Creo que será maravilloso para nosotros ser parte de esa energía. Nos sentimos parte de esa energía, tanto como músicos como fans. Tocaremos nuestras canciones del primer disco.
Srdjan: Tampoco podemos esperar a conocer a algunos amigos de Internet del mismo sello: Chez Kane, Venus 5, Secret Sphere…
Sin duda será una experiencia muy grata para los fans y para vosotros.
Supongo que después de eso tendréis la agenda que arde.
¿Habrá gira y presentación de nuevas canciones para 2023?
Ana: Ya tenemos muchos festivales programados para el verano, pero aún no los hemos anunciado. También hay algunas ideas para un tour, veremos qué tan factible es. Y es muy posible que haya algo de música nueva en 2023.
Finalmente, tienes la oportunidad de expresar a las personas tus impresiones, inquietudes, objetivos, proyectos para este nuevo año… ¿Cuáles serían?
Srdjan: Me gustaría agradecer a todos los que se tomaron el tiempo de leer esto. También, gracias a todos los que se tomaron el tiempo para darle una oportunidad a nuestro álbum. Este es un momento en el que estamos abrumados con material diverso de Internet, y cada vez es más difícil hacer tiempo para la música nueva en esa jungla de tanto material. Mi deseo es que nos divirtamos lo más posible en 2023 y espero que todas las guerras se detengan.

I contacted them and with that kindness they have with their public we talked and here you will find what they have told us.
Aren’t there many Serbian hard rock bands that have been known outside of your country? At least within this style, which brings me to the first question, especially when I heard about you for the first time.
Srdjan: That’s what I get asked all the time. And, yes, it is true that no local band managed to make a breakthrough out of our borders. Many made it in ex-Yugoslavia. However, there are a few exceptions. For example, Ana Popovic, a blues guitarist, is a
Serbian woman who has really been heard of, although she has been living in the USA for a long time. There are also some great innovators who are not from Serbia, but they are of Serbian origin. For example, Aleksandar Živojinović (Alex Lifeson)
from RUSH is of Serbian origin. Although he was born after his parents moved from Serbia to USA. From the world of science, Nikola Tesla was a Serb.
So you could say that you are like pioneers…
How did the idea of this band and this sound come about?
Ana: During the corona period, since they spent a lot of time in the studio, Srdjan, Nevena and Marko started composing some new music and recording covers for a new band/project. I joined them soon after. Alessandro was looking for a composer
and he heard some of Srdjan’s demos, he suggested it to Frontiers, and they liked the whole «package». Then we went together with Frontiers to work on the first album and the band name was found together – The Big Deal.
Well, without a doubt, it was a very successful idea and a very well spent time.
Have you taken other styles or bands as a reference?
Srdjan: When we talk about the first album, I personally tried to make songs that I would like to hear as a fan. I’ve been a collector and fan of all metal/rock styles since I was little boy. I myself would like to have an album like this in my collection. Nevenaupgraded my 100% RnR life with knowledge from the academy, some classical music solutions, and even jazz, when I’m talking about harmony. In addition to singing, I think she also left a big mark in the songs with keyboards. She became a professor at a music school very early. On the other hand, Ana has been singing in a very professional «Abba Tribute» for years and she’s great at it, she’s impressive to me when I see her live. That inspired us, composers, to add that harmonic element to the songs, with 2 female vocals. I have always liked the color and emotion of her voice, since I have known Ana for almost 10 years and we often recorded in my studio in the past.
Following that line and those ideas there is always an established dynamic when it comes to composing.
Who takes the reins in the composition of the themes?
Ana: Srdjan. With the help of Nevena. Alessandro also helped with a song too.
Srdjan: That was the case with the first album. Besides that song that we co-wrote with Alessandro, we did everything else ourselves. But that doesn’t mean it will always be like this. We are open to any kind of cooperation, if it is inspiring.
And the release of the album arrived, an album that if you allow me, looks like a baby made with a lot of Love…
How has been the response you have received from the fans?
Srdjan: Awesome!! We are really delighted and grateful to all those people who started following us. It’s a phenomenal feeling when you realize that there are so many people who are the same as us, who have the same taste as us. We identify with them, and they identify with us. It is the moment when you realize that you are not alone on this planet. We are very grateful to Frontiers, because they actually made it all possible. Working with such a publishing house is a «dream come true» for us.
And you as a band, were you surprised or did you expect that reception?
Ana: Actually, we didn’t think about it at all. We enjoyed the process of making the album. We shoot the videos ourselves and enjoy every second of it. Planning it together with Frontiers was fun. We love doing this, I can even say that we are addicted, addicted to music…regardless of the results and the response. And to make things even bigger, the response was excellent and gave us even more will.
I think that this attitude says a lot about you and your process as musicians, because I also believe that having fun is how you get the best results.
I know that you are a very precise machine of creation and evolution and therefore I would like to know,
When will the new material be ready?
Ana: We are working hard on it!
I am looking forward to it.
Will it continue the dynamic of the previous album, or are you looking for something different?
Srdjan: It’s still too early to talk about it.
There have been comments about a possible covers album. Is it in your plans?
Ana: At one point, Frontiers had some ideas. But I think that will not happen. I even think there will be much less official versions. We will focus on our original material.
Announcing the band’s participation in a festival like Rock Imperium in Spain was a pleasant surprise. How did the proposal come about?
Srdjan: I woke up to find an email invitation from the festival organization. We were all very happy when we received an invitation from the organization «Madness Live» to perform. Just like when we got an email from «TheKissCruise» management. When we went to Los Angeles, the management people told us that they saw our videos and decided to invite us. Brilliant! It’s a response that is, in a way, the crown of our work on the first record with Frontiers.
I imagine the joy and recognition that such a festival has with you, by the way, I am from that city and of course I will be there.
What do you expect from that special date and what can fans see at the festival?
Ana: We hope to have a lot of fun. I think it will be wonderful for us to be a part of that energy. We feel part of that energy, both as musicians and as fans. We will play our songs from the first album.
Srdjan: We also can’t wait to meet some internet friends from the same label: Chez Kane, Venus 5, Secret Sphere…
It will undoubtedly be a very pleasant experience for the fans and for you.
I suppose that after that you will have the dates that burns. Will there be a tour and presentation of new songs for 2023?
Ana: We already have many festivals scheduled for the summer, but we haven’t announced them yet. There are also some ideas for a tour, we’ll see how feasible it is. And there may well be some new music in 2023.
Finally, you have the opportunity to express to people your impressions, concerns, objectives, projects for this new year… What would they be?
Srdjan: I would like to thank everyone who took the time to read this. Also, thanks to everyone who took the time to give our album a try. This is a time when we are overwhelmed with diverse material on the Internet, and it is increasingly difficult to make time for new music in the jungle of so much material. My wish is that we have as much fun as possible in 2023 and I hope that all wars will stop.
