Aunque parecía una quimera, es toda una realidad. Este gran proyecto del sello italiano Frontiers (Serafino Perugino, productor ejecutivo) cumple 20 años desde aquel asombroso debut del 2.003. KHYMERA en su inicio fue el encuentro sorprendente entre un multi instrumentista italiano llamado Daniele Liverani (Empty Tremor/GENIUS a Rock Opera) y un As del MelodicRock Progresivo como Steve Walsh (Kansas/Streets). Impresionante era también el relumbrón que provocaba ver los créditos de los compositores y colaboradores que hicieron de ese primer disco una maravillosa pieza de arte.
La primera aparición de Dennis Ward (Pink Cream 69/Magnum/Unisonic/etc.) como cantante se produce en el segundo disco “A New Promise«, (2.005), del que se ocupa también de mezclarlo. Todavía con la presencia de Daniele Liverani en teclados y bajo, aquí Dennis Ward ya se destapa en la voz solista. Demuestra parte de sus capacidades roqueras y melódicas que ya había desempeñado haciendo coros y guías vocales a lo largo de su carrera musical. Su calidad y protagonismo se confirman, su bajo y su gran voz crecen y se hacen con las riendas absolutas de KHYMERA en los siguientes discos del apreciado proyecto.
Ahora llega este sexto nuevo capítulo llamado “Hold Your Ground”. Se aposenta como un proyecto duradero y con firmeza se mantiene en la competitiva actualidad del Hard Aor. En el diseño gráfico, La Dama de la Justicia hace presencia en una portada incendiaria, representativa de una justicia progresista que debería ser equilibrada, ciega y firme. Aunque se tambalee el suelo y algun@s quieran destruir sus cimientos desde dentro, defenderá con su espada el rigor y su cuestionada independencia. Junto a los eficaces y resolutivos músicos que le acompañan, que son los siguientes; Michael Klein-guitarras (Wicked Sensation), Eric Ragno-teclados (mil sesiones…), Michael Kolar-batería y con Pete Newdeck (Eden’s Curse) apoyando en los coros. Dennis Ward vuelve a encandilarnos con su producción, su experiencia en el bajo, aportaciones de teclado y una voz lo notablemente buena como para disfrutar de una ejecución impecable y valiosa.
Se lo curra y hace pesas con su garganta como Harry Hess en la tremenda “Don’t wait for love”. Cuando una canción es buena se canta sola y del tirón, se recrea el guapo estribillo y se gustan los instrumentos espaciados. Ordenado y ardiente. Su rango bajo a lo Gary Hughes es magnífico en “Firestarter”, lo borda y se mueve con habilidad interpretativa y vocal, sabe muy bien lo que canta, lo eterniza y te eleva al estribillo con guitarras de diez, o sea, de Ten. No teme a su agudo de comienzo y modula su fuerza con elegancia en “Hear me calling”, es veterano y se conoce todos los trucos del Hard Aor, de la misma manera, el guitarra sabe que lo poco y bueno nunca cansa, imposible desviar la atención, potencia y feeling vital, ya te dejó en pelotas. Teclados tradicionales, ritmos con belleza y tensión en “Sail on forever”, guitarra en modo control total y otro estribillo a lo Harem Scarem para caer rendido en el subidón. Volver a levantarse y pelear con coraje de guerrero melódico, tipo Joe Lynn Turner es una norma básica en este estilo.
Con gran Piano y teclado para entradilla hiper melódica de medio tiempo a lo Magnum, cuando babearon con el sonido americano, en “Our love is killing me” es suficiente para tumbarse y respirar. Similitudes con el proyecto First Signal de Hess , solo breve y conciso, todo es calidad de la buena en “Hear what I’m saying”, sonido sin fronteras pero dentro del universo Frontiers. Se asemeja “Believe in what you want” a una motivadora canción típica de película 80’s, y a pesar de que Stan Bush siempre gana la batalla ,esta está protagonizada por una voz que ya tiene su solera y exclusividad garantizada. Dennis Ward seguramente se emocionó con el intenso despliegue de “On the edge”, el teclista lo disfrutó seguro, el guitarra se lo pasó de fábula, el batería voló alto y golpeó mientras reía. Es mi tema preferido porque soy un defensor del Hard Rock Aorizado bien cantado.
Esa vena europea de influencia nórdica sosegada se distingue en “Coul have been us” y la intro de guitarra se dibuja limpia y aseada. Otro estribillo de blancura nuclear y aparecen los coros de color cal, guitarra y teclas transparentes en un tema adorable y muy bien creado. Comienzo y deriva enérgica para el Pop Rock de” Runaway”, el solo es como un maullido enfadado, es real y palpable la intensidad conjunta del grupo, aunque se intercambien datos fríos y voladores. En la última “Am I dreaming” se mueven con progresión y marcan con decisión cada pulso sonoro. Los teclados son muy AOR monstruoso y se arriman hasta morderse con las cuerdas vocales y guitarristicas. Constante es la demostración de poderío imaginativo en todo lo que canta, un tema a lo Seventh Key y muy Kansas, en clave Hard y con el talentazo del genio Steve Walsh. Aunque lo mejor del álbum es que Dennis Ward suena a Dennis Ward.
Las canciones transcurren rápidas y directas, varias escuchas y te transformaras. Tu cabeza será de león, tu cuerpo mutará a una especie por descubrir y te crecerá una cola de dragón…será un sueño, una ilusión, una Khymera…o no.

KHYMERA at its inception was the surprising meeting between an Italian multi-instrumentalist named Daniele Liverani (Empty Tremor/GENIUS a Rock Opera) and a Progressive MelodicRock Ace like Steve Walsh (Kansas/Streets). Impressive was also the flash caused by seeing the credits of the composers and collaborators who made that first album a wonderful piece of art.
The first appearance of Dennis Ward (Pink Cream 69/Magnum/Unisonic/etc.) as a singer occurs on the second album «A New Promise» (2005), which he also mixes. Still with the presence of Daniele Liverani on keyboards and bass, here Dennis Ward already stands out in the solo voice. He demonstrates part of his rock and melodic abilities that he had already performed as choirs and vocal guides throughout his musical career. His quality and prominence are confirmed, his bass and his great voice grow and take over the absolute reins of KHYMERA in the following albums of the appreciated project.
Now comes this sixth new chapter called “Hold Your Ground”. It is established as a long-lasting project and remains firmly in today’s competitive Hard Aor. In the graphic design, The Lady of Justice is present in an incendiary art work, representative of a progressive justice that should be balanced, blind and firm. Although the ground shakes and some @ s want to destroy its foundations from within, she will defend rigor and her questioned independence with her sword. Together with the effective and decisive musicians who accompany him, who are the following; Michael Klein-guitars (Wicked Sensation), Eric Ragno-keyboards (a thousand sessions…), Michael Kolar-drums and with Pete Newdeck (Eden’s Curse) supporting the choirs. He works hard and does weights with his throat like Harry Hess in the tremendous “Do not wait for love”. When a song is good it is sung alone and in one breath, the handsome chorus is recreated and the spaced out instruments are liked. Tidy and hot. His Gary Hughes-like low range is magnificent in “Firestarter”, he borders on it and moves with interpretive and vocal ability, he knows what he’s singing very well, he perpetuates it and elevates you to the chorus with guitars of ten, that is, of Ten. He is not afraid of its sharp start and elegantly modulates his strength in «Hear me calling», he is a veteran and knows all the tricks of the Hard Aor, in the same way, the guitarist knows that the little and good never tires, it is impossible to divert the attention, power and vital feeling, already left you naked. Traditional keyboards, rhythms with beauty and tension in “Sail on forever”, guitar in full control mode and another Harem Scarem chorus to fall asleep in the rush. Getting back up and fighting with the courage of a melodic warrior, like Joe Lynn Turner is a basic rule in this style.
With a grand piano and keyboard for a hyper melodic mid-tempo lead a la Magnum, when they drool over the American sound, in «Our love is killing me» it’s enough to lie down and breathe. Similarities with Hess’s First Signal project, only brief and concise, everything is good quality in «Hear what I’m saying», sound without borders but within the Frontiers universe. «Believe in what you want» resembles a typical 80’s movie motivating song, and despite the fact that Stan Bush always wins the battle, this is led by a voice that already has its tradition and guaranteed exclusivity. Dennis Ward was surely moved by the intense display of “On the edge”, the keyboardist enjoyed it for sure, the guitarist had a fabulous time, the drummer flew high and hit while he laughed. It’s my favorite song because I’m a defender of well-sung Aorized Hard Rock.
That European vein of calm Nordic influence is distinguished in «Coul have been us» and the guitar intro is drawn clean and neat. Another chorus of nuclear whiteness and the choruses of lime color, guitar and transparent keys appear in an adorable and very well created theme. Beginning and energetic drift for the Pop Rock of “Runaway”, the solo is like an angry meow, the joint intensity of the group is real and palpable, although cold and flying data is exchanged. In the last “Am I dreaming” they move progressively and decisively mark each sound pulse. The keyboards are very monstrous AOR and come close to biting with the vocal and guitar chords. Constant is the demonstration of imaginative power in everything he sings, a song a la Seventh Key and very Kansas, in a Hard key and with the great talent of the genius Steve Walsh. Although the best thing about the album is that Dennis Ward sounds like Dennis Ward.
The songs pass fast and direct, several listens and you will be transformed. Your head will be a lion’s, your body will mutate into a species to be discovered and a dragon’s tail will grow… it will be a dream, an illusion, a Khymera… or not.
