The Ragged Saints «Sonic Playground Revisited» 2020 (AOR Heaven) Review. English Below.

Han pasado siete años desde aquel apetitoso debut The Sound Of Breaking Free y algunos ya nos temíamos que no habría continuidad para los finlandeses, pero no es así e inauguran 2020 con un segundo hijo para el sello discográfico AOR Heaven.

Y es que este trabajo ha tardado en gestarse, debido, parece ser, a asuntos personales, algunos proyectos paralelos de sus componentes, en definitiva, que se han tomado las cosas con calma para componer y grabar, tomando un poco de aquí y un poco de allí, aprovechando el bagaje que dan otras experiencias musicales y la calma de quien no tiene que ceñirse a unos plazos para sacar un disco, y a mi parecer les ha quedado más robusto, más melódico y con la dosis de comercialidad justa que tanto nos gusta a los fans de este estilo.

The Ragged Saints fue formado en 2011 por los guitarristas Tomi Julkunen y Toni Bite, que tras componer un montón de canciones, ficharon a Markku Kuikka, un cantante con una visión similar a la banda, un frontman con gran recorrido en su país, Finlandia ya que ha tomado parte en otros agrupaciones como Grönholm o la banda de metal progresivo, Status Minor. Posteriormente, se incorporaría el bajista Jukka Hoffrén y el batería, Miikki Kunttu.

Sonic Playground Revisited sigue en la línea de su predecesor en las cuales el sonido 80´s  vuelve a ser el eje principal, aunque en esta ocasión se ha intensificado el sonido de sintetizadores y se ha añadido orquestación. 

El álbum contiene 10 nuevas canciones. El comienzo es con Never Gonna Let You Down y un adictivo riff de guitarra y teclados en nada más abrir el tema, Like A Spinning Wheel, me recuerda más a bandas como Grand Design, Khymera, The Magnificent de AOR europeo;  muy apetecible y coreable resulta Take Me With You. Secret In Our Hearts, me lleva a unos derroteros más hard rock,  quizá más de la onda King Kobra.

La aguerrida balada Just Believe donde la profunda voz de Markku Kuikka se erige en protagonista del corte , Absence Of Light,  un tema que puede recordar a unos jóvenes Pretty Maids, fuerza y melodía entremezclados.

Muy encaminado hacia un AOR actual europeo Forever, o Pretending Diamond. Mantenemos el nivel con otro temazo, Turning Cold. Estamos llegando al final y el disco me tiene totalmente arriba, no hay tema malo.

Para lo último, Supernatural con una estrofa de riffs duretes y un estribillo de lo más  melódico y orquestación final que hace el cierre de honor.

Si el primer álbum creó unas buenas expectativas sobre la banda, con este Sonic Playground Revisited sube otro peldaño y llega casi a la azotea de un solo paso. Estoy convencida que el álbum dará bastante que hablar este año.

Seven years have passed since that appetizing debut The Sound Of Breaking Free and some of us already feared there would be no continuity for the Finns, but it is not like that and they inaugurate 2020 with a second son for the AOR Heaven record label.

And it is that this work has been slow to take shape, due, it seems, to personal matters, some parallel projects of its components, in short, that things have been taken calmly to compose and record, taking a bit of here and a little from there, taking advantage of the baggage that other musical experiences give and the calm of those who do not have to stick to deadlines to get a record, and in my opinion they have been more robust, more melodic and with the dose of fair commerciality that we like so much To fans of this style.

Sonic Playground Revisited continues in the line of its predecessor in which the 80’s sound is again the main axis, although this time the sound of synthesizers has been intensified and orchestration has been added.

The album contains 10 new songs. The beginning is with Never Gonna Let You Down and an addictive guitar riff and keyboards as soon as the theme is opened, Like A Spinning Wheel, reminds me more of bands like Grand Design, Khymera, The Magnificent of European AOR; Take Me With You is very appetizing and choreable. Secret In Our Hearts, takes me to a harder rock course, maybe more of the King Kobra wave.

The fierce ballad Just Believe where the deep voice of Markku Kuikka stands as the protagonist of the cut, Absence Of Light, a theme that can remind young Pretty Maids, strength and melody intermingled.

Very directed towards a current AOR European, Forever  or Pretending Diamond. We maintain the level with another great song, Turning Cold. We are reaching the end and the album has me totally up, there is no bad issue.

Finally, Supernatural with a stanza of hard riffs and a chorus of the most melodic and final orchestration that makes the closing of honor.

If the first album created good expectations about the band, this Sonic Playground Revisited climbs another step and reaches almost the roof in one step. I am convinced that the album will give a lot to talk about this year.
